MOUNTAIN ATHLETE - GUIDE - SKI INSTRUCTOR

My goal is to get out in the mountains– climbing, running, skiing—- adventuring in every way I can, and showing others how to as well.

For 25 years I’ve called Aspen and Colorado home, and I take every opportunity to challenge myself and to encourage others to do the same.

GUIDING

Guided climbs, hikes, runs, hut trips, backpacks, and backcountry ski adventures– I operate under the permit of Aspen Alpine Guides. I have over two decades of experience in the mountains around Aspen, I’m a Wilderness First Responder and AIARE Level 2 avalanche certified.

SKIING

Heading to Aspen and need some instruction or a guide for your group? I’ve been a ski pro with the Ski Schools of Aspen/Snowmass for over 20 years and am PSIA fully certified. Bowl hikes, family privates, one-on-one, I can make sure you have a great ski experience while you’re here in Aspen.

MOUNTAIN ATHLETE

As a competitive ultrarunner I’ve completed more than 50 ultra distance events including ten Hardrock 100’s. In 2016 I was the 15th person to complete the grueling Nolan’s 14 course here in Colorado.

As a ski mountaineer I was the 3rd person to ski the Colorado 14ers. In 2015 I was honored to be National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year for Ski Mountaineering with my wife Christy and partner Chris Davenport after completing our project to ski the 100 highest mountains in Colorado.

I’ve climbed mountains all over the world including Everest in 2003, as well as Ama Dablam, Denali, and the high summits of the South American Andes.

New year, new challenges. It’s been three weeks New year, new challenges. It’s been three weeks since hip replacement surgery, and things are going well. I’m up and about, walking around town, on the stationary bike. No skiing, yet. But it isn’t far off!

I had been managing my deteriorating joint for many years... dealing with increasing pain and a continued loss of my range of motion. It forced me to pull back on some activities, and give up others altogether, like running, which has always been important to me.
🏃🏻👎🏻😢
For years I aggressively explored the so-called “conservative treatments” to get the most out of my existing joint— PT, massage, acupuncture, nutrition, supplements, yoga, etc.— all in an effort to adapt to the worsening condition. But those options aren’t cures, they only buy time. Eventually the loss of cartilage overrules everything else, and that’s when the decision becomes clear.
🏥
So with the procedure behind me and a clear path forward, add me to the list of those who are excited to move past 2020, and tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Cheers to the New Year and all that it may bring. 🌅😊💪🏼

RBG. 🇺🇸 Christy had the honor of meeting her RBG. 🇺🇸 Christy had the honor of meeting her in Aspen a few years ago. When the host of the gathering introduced them to each other, mentioning Christy’s long list of outdoor achievements, RBG, who had grown into an ardent fitness junkie herself, nodded with approval.

You can almost picture the exchange. I always thought it was funny to imagine the two of them together in a fitness class.

Christy looked up to her as we all did. She cared so much about many of the important issues of our day, and she embraced her role as one of the last defenders of those rights in the broken system we find ourselves.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, she remained in her role until the day she died. She had to, she knew what was at stake. After she passed away a little more than a month ago, her daughter said her last dying wish was not to be replaced until after the election.

We all know the rest of the story. With the dramatic new court alignment, a lot of critical policies that define this country will likely be on the chopping block.

RBG fought for us until her last dying breath and without the firewall she helped provide, it’s the voters who are now the last line of defense.

So if you haven’t voted, make a plan to do so. Now. There’s more on the line in this election than any other in our lives.

Get out and VOTE! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 #election2020 #getoutandvote
